High grade refractive errors
In some cases, the desire for a life without glasses can not be realized by a laser surgery alone. A Lasik surgery also has its limits. In general, refractive errors are corrected from +4 dpt. to -8 dpt. and astigmatism up to -4 dpt with the LASIK method.
In order to realize higher corrections, an intraocular lens must be implanted infront of the natural lens or the natural lens must be replaced. If astigmatism is remained after this procedure a method called bioptics can be undertaken. This is a combined surgery, which initially treats nearsightedness or farsightedness by implanting a lens. The rest visual defect (e.g.astigmatism) is corrected in a following surgery by using the excimer laser (LASIK surgery).
